Assyrian Universal
Alliance
40th Anniversary
of AUA
Friday, April 11, 2008
On April 10, 1968
for the first time after WWI the Assyrian patriots and organizations
gathered in the city of Pau, France to address the atrocities
committed against the Assyrian people in the Middle East, and to
organize themselves in a political body to protect the Assyrian
Nation’s rights and actively pursue the dream of liberty and freedom
for our beloved people. They established four aims:
-
ONE NAME FOR
ONE NATION,
-
ONE LANGUAGE FOR ONE NATION,
-
ONE LEADERSHIP FOR ONE NATION,
and
-
A HOMELAND FOR OUR NATION
To achieve these ideological
objectives they agreed to establish a
representative body comprised of Assyrian Nation’s social and
political organizations, intellectuals and activists.
Since then the Assyrian Universal Alliance has
worked to fulfill those unifying aims.
Today after forty years of existence this
work is being continued by a new generation of Assyrian activists
and political and social institutions. During this time the Assyrian
Universal Alliance has endeavored to promote the Assyrian National
identity and keep the dream of freedom and liberty alive within our
scattered communities.
The Assyrian Universal Alliance has promoted
a unifying identity by establishing and endorsing the Assyrian
National flag as a symbol of our nation. This flag flies proudly
during the Assyrian events worldwide as a symbol of our nation.
The Assyrian Universal Alliance has promoted
a unifying identity by establishing and endorsing August 7th as the
Assyrian Martyrs Day. This annual event is commemorated by the
Assyrians worldwide remembering and honoring the sacrifices that our
predecessors have made for the sake of the Assyrian Cause and our
national rights.
The Assyrian Universal Alliance has promoted
a unifying identity by establishing and endorsing the Assyrian
National New Year, Rish Nissan. This annual event is celebrated by
Assyrians worldwide to support our culture and heritage.
The Assyrian Universal Alliance has promoted
a unifying identity by encouraging our social and religious
institutions to teach and use the Assyrian language. The Assyrian
Universal Alliance has been instrumental in publishing countless
books to promote the Assyrian language.
The Assyrian Universal Alliance has promoted
a unifying ideology that the Assyrian nation shall have
self-governing on the lands of its forefathers. To that end the
Assyrian Universal Alliance has approached different governments,
the United Nations, non-governmental organizations and other
international bodies raising awareness of the Assyrian issues and
lobbying for an Assyrian homeland which is based on formal requests
made by the Assyrians at the end of WWI. In its latest action,
recently the Assyrian Universal Alliance distributed the map of
Assyria Province and the Assyrian Security Zone to numerous U.S.
Senators and Iraqi government officials enlisting support for a
homeland for the Assyrians.
The Assyrian Universal Alliance reiterates
its pledge to continue to work toward achieving the ultimate goal of
our nation which is a homeland for our people.
